National Gear Rules

National Gear Rules apply across all disciplines and all PCA-affiliated competitions. All riders, coaches, and officials should be familiar with the current edition and any active addendums.

Discipline Rules & Handbooks

Dressage competitions at PCV events follow Equestrian Australia (EA) rules adapted for Pony Club. Rules cover test formats, judging criteria, and permitted equipment.

Horse Trials (Eventing)

Horse Trials combines dressage, cross-country, and showjumping phases. PCV Horse Trial competitions follow national Pony Club rules adapted from EA eventing regulations.

Mounted Games

Fast-paced, team-based relay competitions. The Mounted Games Handbook covers game formats, equipment, team structure and rules for club through to national competition level.

Showjumping

PCV showjumping competitions follow EA rules, covering course design, penalty systems, jump heights by age/grade, and competition formats including time allowed calculations.

Tetrathlon

A multi-phase discipline combining riding, running, swimming, and shooting. The Tetrathlon handbook and rule book cover all four phases, scoring, age categories, and equipment standards. Note the 2024 amendments to the 2023 rule book.

Ride to Time

Ride to Time tests a rider’s ability to accurately maintain a set pace over a measured distance β€” without a watch. Rules cover permitted aids, course marking, timing methods, and scoring.

Quiz

Quiz competitions test members’ equestrian knowledge across horse care, riding theory, Pony Club principles, and more. No riding required β€” the handbook covers question categories, team formats, and scoring.

Horse Archery

A growing discipline combining horsemanship with mounted archery. The PCA rule book covers equipment standards, course setup, scoring, and safety protocols. A PCA introductory video is also available.

Pony Racing

The National Pony Racing Series Rules cover eligibility, selection criteria, race day procedures, and safety requirements for PCA’s national pony racing competition.

Riders with Special Requirements

PCV and PCA are committed to inclusion. Riders requiring exemptions from standard gear rules or special considerations for participation can submit an application via the forms below.

Gear Exemption Application
Apply for an exemption from specific gear requirements where medical, physical, or other grounds exist. Submitted directly to Pony Club Australia for assessment.
All Abilities Riders β€” Exemption Application
All Abilities riders requiring special consideration or modified participation conditions can submit an application for exemption through Pony Club Australia.
