How does it work?
The Riders Without Horses program allows members to participate in Pony Club activities using horses and ponies made available by their club or fellow members. Each club manages its own program, so what’s available will vary — but the underlying aim is always the same: to make Pony Club accessible to everyone, regardless of whether they own a horse.
Shared horses at rallies
Some clubs have horses available for use during rallies. Members may take turns riding throughout the session, with unmounted learning and horse care activities filling the time between rides.
Unmounted participation
Riders Without Horses members participate fully in unmounted activities — horse care, knowledge sessions, quiz preparation, games, and theory — building their horsemanship even when not in the saddle.
Grading and certificates
Members can still work toward proficiency certificates while riding a club or shared horse. The learning pathway remains open regardless of horse ownership.
A pathway to ownership
Many riders begin without a horse and acquire one as their experience and commitment grows. Pony Club is the ideal place to build that foundation before making the commitment to horse ownership.
Is it available at my local club?
Not every club runs a formal Riders Without Horses program, and availability of shared horses varies. We strongly recommend contacting your local club directly to ask about their current arrangements before registering.
Questions to ask your local club
- Do you have horses available for members who don’t own one?
- How many rides per rally would a Riders Without Horses member typically get?
- Are there any additional fees for using club or shared horses?
- Can I still work toward certificates and compete at events?
- Is there a waitlist for Riders Without Horses places?
Good to know: Riders Without Horses is not a separate membership category — members register as standard Riding Members and simply participate using a horse made available by the club or another member. All standard membership benefits and insurance coverage apply.
Other ways to get involved without a horse
Horse ownership isn’t the only way to be part of Pony Club Victoria. There are several other pathways:
Quiz team
Quiz is a fully unmounted discipline — no horse required at all. Members compete on equestrian knowledge across written, classroom, and stable phases. A great option for those with a passion for horses but limited riding access.
Adult Supporter membership
Adults who don’t ride can join as an Adult Supporter — volunteering at events, joining the committee, or helping with club operations. Pony Club genuinely cannot function without its supporters.
Coach membership
If you have equestrian knowledge and a passion for developing young riders, becoming an accredited PCV coach is a rewarding path that doesn’t require personal horse ownership.
