Dressage

What is it?
Discover the art of partnership on horseback! Dressage is a test of harmony between rider and pony, where you perform a series of precise movements in an arena. It’s like ballet for horses – elegant, graceful, and rewarding.
In Pony Club Victoria, there are seven grades, starting from Grade 6 in a 40m x 20m arena and progressing to Advanced levels. Whether you’re a beginner learning basic trots or an advanced rider mastering flying changes, dressage helps you and your horse communicate effectively. As an Olympic equestrian sport, it opens doors to exciting possibilities.
How to get involved
Getting started is simple and welcoming. Join a local Pony Club Victoria club to access rallies and training – clubs across the state cater to all ages and levels. From there, participate in zone qualifiers and state championships. No advanced equipment is needed initially; just bring your enthusiasm and a pony. Parents, explore our inclusive programs for beginner tips. Current members can register for events like the 2025 National Championships at Werribee Park (October 1–5) via our calendar, where qualified, sound, and fit horse-rider combinations are required. Coaches can organize sessions using our rally support resources.
Skill development
Dressage develops key skills like balance, coordination, and patience for both rider and horse. You’ll learn to read your pony’s body language, improve posture, and develop an effective seat. As you advance through the grades, you’ll handle more complex patterns, building confidence and focus. It also covers horse care, such as grooming and health checks. Updates to proficiency certificates, including the new “E” level for beginners, support steady progress with a focus on safety and welfare. Coaches and officials can use our syllabus to create progressive lessons.
Related disciplines
Dressage serves as a strong foundation for other activities. It integrates well with Horse Trials/Eventing (as one of its three phases) and Show Jumping (for improved control over fences). If you enjoy precision, consider Combined Training as well.

Dressage Grades
Dressage grades offer a clear, step-by-step progression. These levels build skills from basic harmony to advanced elegance, all while prioritizing fun, safety, and horse welfare. Each grade uses specific tests in arenas that grow with complexity, starting smaller for beginners.
Grade 6: The Starting Point for Beginners
Perfect for new riders dipping their toes into dressage! This entry-level grade focuses on building confidence and basic control without overwhelming you.
- Skills and Focus: Control your pony’s speed and direction in a safe, calm way. It’s all about achieving simple directives while keeping things happy and error-free – no penalties for small mistakes here.
- Movements: Walk and trot basics, like riding center lines, turns at E and B, and diagonal lines. Learn to salute properly (halt, reins in left hand, nod, and smile!).
- Arena Size: Typically a cozy 40m x 20m to keep it manageable.
Grade 5: Adding Circles and First Canters
Step up the fun as you introduce more shapes and a taste of canter!
- Skills and Focus: Maintain pace and lines with smooth corners. No worries about wrong trotting diagonals or canter leads – the emphasis is on a safe, happy partnership.
- Movements: Circles and half-circles at E, B, and C; canter for a set number of strides or to a marker; straight, still halts.
- Arena Size: Still beginner-friendly, often 40m x 20m.
Grade 4: Building Rhythm and Stretch
Now we’re trotting forward with energy differences and freer walks – feel the progress!
- Skills and Focus: Ride forward at a consistent tempo, balance transitions (including halt through walk), and ask for flexion in corners and circles. Steady hands and recognizing correct canter leads are key.
- Movements: Rising trot work; “increase in trot” showing more energy; free walk on a loose rein with stretching and a marching stride.
- Arena Size: Continues in a 40m x 20m arena for familiarity.
Grade 3: Expanding to a Bigger Arena
Exciting milestone – welcome to the larger arena and more dynamic movements!
- Skills and Focus: Ride straight and forward at the right tempo, with accuracy in transitions (2-3 walk steps into/out of halt allowed). Halts should be immobile with level front feet.
- Movements: Stretching trot (gradual stretch with elastic contact); moderately lengthened strides; medium walk; 20m circles at X; 3-loop serpentine; canter on diagonals. Sitting trot is optional.
- Arena Size: First use of the 60m x 20m arena, adding space to explore.
Grade 2: Developing Contact and Lateral Skills
Things get more engaging with leg yields and changes – you’re becoming a true team!
- Skills and Focus: Ride into steady rein contact, straight and forward, with quality transitions. Develop a balanced seat in sitting trot and canter; understand flexion and bend.
- Movements: Direct trot/halt/trot transitions; square halts; leg yielding; lengthening in canter; 10m trot circles; simple changes through trot; giving reins in canter (2-3 strides); 5m canter loops; 4-loop serpentines.
- Arena Size: 60m x 20m to accommodate advanced patterns.
Grade 1: Introducing Collection and Medium Paces
Advanced harmony awaits – this level polishes your partnership with collection and lateral finesse.
- Skills and Focus: Balanced, effective position with clear transitions within and between paces. Develop collected and medium paces; understand “on the bit” with an uphill outline and harmony.
- Movements: Lateral work like shoulder-in and travers; turn on the haunches; beginnings of collection; medium trot and canter with suspension.
- Arena Size: Standard 60m x 20m for complex tests.
Advanced: The Pinnacle of Precision
The top tier for skilled riders – showcase elegance and subtle aids in harmony.
- Skills and Focus: Effective, balanced seat with steady contact and discreet aids. Maintain quality paces in full harmony between horse and rider.
- Movements: Builds on Grade 1 with advanced elements like half-passes, pirouettes, and extended paces (though specifics may align with EA/FEI standards for Pony Club).
- Arena Size: 60m x 20m for championship-level tests.
