In Memoriam: Diana Bassett-Smith, Pony Club Pioneer
Kangaroo Ground, VIC – Diana Bassett-Smith, a foundational figure in Victoria’s Pony Club community, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2025, at the age of 96. As one of the original four founders of the Pony Club Association of Victoria (now Pony Club Victoria), alongside Miss Kay and Jess Tomlinson, Diana played a pivotal role in establishing the organization in 1953. Her legacy includes founding Eltham Pony Club in 1953 and Kangaroo Ground Pony Club (KGPC) in 1967.
Diana, a life member of Eltham, KGPC, and the Northern Metropolitan Zone (NMZ), served as the first District Commissioner for KGPC and was a beloved judge at the club’s fancy dress events for many years. Her dedication as a volunteer shaped generations of equestrians and strengthened the Pony Club community.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at 2:30pm at Heidelberg Golf Club, 8 Main Road, Lower Plenty. Pony Club members are invited to attend in uniform as a tribute to her enduring contributions. For those unable to attend, the service will be livestreamed at hallsfunerals.com.au.
Diana is survived by her children Robin, Johnathon, and Elizabeth, her children-in-law Janet and Tony, and her grandchildren Jeremy, Christina, Richard, Peter, Andrew, and Paris. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter, in 2011.
Her commitment to fostering equestrian passion and community spirit will live on in the clubs she helped build. Rest in peace, Diana.
